Marvel Champions can be overwhelming to someone grabbing a deck for the first time. Even when an advanced player is looking to help them learn, the reality is there are so many decisions that it's hard not to jump in and give advice. Additionally, if you build a deck that dumbs down the decisions too much, the game can become a monotonous slog, which will wreck the chances of them playing again.

This deck is meant to play with an advanced level of decision making for both solo and team play, but with the added bonus of a cheat sheet to follow. Each turn becomes repetitive practice and choices end up being informed as opposed to being a guessing game. Once everything clicks, the goal is for your friend to start playing independently, referencing instead of relying upon the cheat sheet itself!

NOTE: Before the game starts, be sure to provide 5-10 minutes for the new player to look through the deck, ask questions, and learn how basic actions work. Even with the cheat sheet, sending someone in on a dry run without the basics is a sure way for them to hate the game later. Also, its recommended to print off the HOW TO PLAY section below for the new player to follow themselves.

HOW TO PLAY (PRINT ME!!!!!)

START OF GAME

VILLAIN PHASE

  • STEP 0a: During the Villain Phase use Energy Conversion and Bishop's Uniform to mitigate damage, gain back whatever Resources are laying in the discard, and heal back some health.

  • STEP 0b: Defend if you feel it's necessary OR feel free to use any Allies as a shield. Once you add Symbiote Suit and Bishop's Uniform, feel free to take any attack to the face!

HERO PHASE (FOLLOW THESE STEPS IN ORDER)

OR

  • Step 3b: Play an Ally card based on your resources and circumstance. If it makes sense, Lockjaw can be played from the discard pile. Hope Summers is also great for a free Super-Charged

  • Step 4: Concussive Blast and Command Authority

  • Step 5: Use any basic actions available from your Hero or Allies.

  • Step 6: Think of your friends or plan for the future! Add a double icon resource to Resource Reserve for a friend to use or send Slingshot over when your at your ally limit. Remember, Avengers Mansion can be used for a friend as well!

EDUCATORS NOTES

This deck is a great example of Sequential Learning, or learning through a Step-by-Step process. Think of it like reading the directions of a package of Cup Noodles. The order of operation matters because missing a step can mess up the whole process. This deck is a perfect example as it emphasizes gaining resources from the deck and discard, then using abilities to take advantage of them being in your hand. Only after this is done should they be spent on Supports, Upgrades, or Allies.

The deck ignores any theme by throwing in random allies from across Marvel spectrum and utilizing Symbiote Suit for the +1 hand size and major stat boost. The entire point is to follow the outlined steps, and realize why each steps progression matters. This is also why the deck avoids chained together events or triggers.

BEGINNER'S SERIES NOTE

These decks are designed for friends new to the game, while also being fun to play for a veteran. For context, my professional background is in training teachers in how students learn as a school administrator and professor, so I am actually building these decks using my background in educational pedagogy, not just what's easiest. I would rather people learn to love playing this game in the same manner I would want them to love taking part in my class. The last section in the guide will actually break down the educational rational of the deck, much in the same way a teacher would do a unit plan.
