Ever since the new Valkyrie cards were revealed, I've been wondering how best to make use of Quick Strike, Smash the Problem and The Best Defense… cards. With most heroes having a basic attack of 2 or 3, it's not overly worth using these cards to get in an extra attack, or to use the attack value to thwart or defend. However, using Brute Force as a way of increasing a heroes attack value, some heroes can get up to 6 ATK. The problem with Brute Force of course is that you can't use your basic attack, as it'll cause the card to discard. So which hero has a high natural attack value, but doesn't overly want to exhaust to attack?

The answer of course is Hawkeye, who would love to use his exhausting ability to play extra arrows. And with his bow, he already has an attack value of 3, so he can get up to 6 after the Brute Forces are down, and 7 with Combat Training. At 7, Smash the Problem gives great Thwarting for a single cost. Even better, The Best Defense... will allow our glass cannon of a hero to be able to defend pretty much any attack.

At this point, the rest of the deck sort of builds itself. The only other card that allows a hero to use their attack value without the basic attack is As One!, so this requires having a Guardian ally down. Fortunately, Hawkeye already has a need to flood the field with cheap allies, so we're running the full slate of 0 and 2 cost allies, including Angela, Bug and Marvel Boy. Make sure one of these stays on the table at all times so As One! can connect.

As One!, Smash the Problem and The Best Defense... will all require an exhaust of Hawkeye to use, but if you don't play one of those cards, then you should be able to play two arrows instead which is still an excellent use of resources.

Totally strange that the guy with the bow and arrow is able to make use of Brute Force to Smash the Problem, but that's pretty much par for the course for Hawkeye isn't it?

Very cool combo!

I love it! What do you think of including Energy Spear to the deck? It would make As One! even better :D

Dec 13, 2021 InigoMontoya · 4722

I love these inventive ways of using Brute Force with the new aggression cards. Genius! Given that you have 12 attack events all costing 2 each, Martial Prowess seems like a good add.

@neothechosen Thanks for the compliment! Always nice to hear from one of the best :)

@Sippik I did consider Energy Spear and also Enraged but came across two reasons its not included in this build. The first is that I would struggle to find a card to replace which is clearly inferior. As One! is a bit situational and I think this deck needs all the allies it can get, as well as the Endurance. Not overly sure what I would cut just to get 2 more damage for each As One!

The other reason is that as soon as an attachment goes on an ally, then it can't be used for blocking (well it can I guess...) and Hawkeye needs blocks if he cant play The Best Defense...

That being said, its certainly possible to make that change depending on scenario and player count.

I love everything about this.

If your wombo combo is As One! I'd recommend packing an Energy Spear and Enraged. You can get Angela up to a whopping 6 ATK and just let her sit there waiting for your combo. While further thinning your deck to draw into your cards more often!

Dec 13, 2021 teamcanadahockey2002 · 8732

@InigoMontoya Martial Prowess was my last cut... I really wanted to include it since it could also pay for arrows but just wanted more allies in there

This is super smart! I look forward to giving this a try. I'll probably toss in a couple Battle Furies for the readies, or maybe a couple EMH. Thanks for sharing!

I just stopped everything I was doing to play this deck and it's been super fun. Klaw didn't even know what was coming!

Dec 13, 2021 Celephais · 1

Really clever idea! I've not got War Machine yet, so I've just got 1 Martial Prowess and 2 The Power of Aggression in for now. Lookong forward to trying it out - thanks for the deck!

This is a smart way to bring an old card back into the fray.

Dec 13, 2021 Brian-V · 46010

@teamcanadahockey2002 Good to see another one of your decks! I tried something very similar (but added the Energy Spear). I don't think I quite had the right combination of cards when I built mine, looking forward to playing this better version! Kudos.

@KennedyHawk How do you get a KennedyHawk to stop whatever he's doing immediately no matter what? Show him a great Hawkeye deck on MarvelCDB.

Dec 13, 2021 teamcanadahockey2002 · 8732

@KennedyHawk Stopping everything to play this deck is about the best compliment you could ever pay someone. Thanks!

@Brian-V I think I beat you to posting this deck by just a few hours before your Ant-Man one. I too was also working on this for Ant-Man (and She-Hulk) as they also have ways to boost their attack, but ultimately settled on posting this one because I felt like the deck just jived better with Hawkeye's kit - which is unique because his kit doesn't really seem to integrate with any other cards normally. Maybe that's what made me feel like it makes it work best here... I'd always be tempted to attack with Ant-Man or She-Hulk and then lose those Brute Forces. I do like your deck though as long I can avoid that temptation lol

The Energy Spear + Engaged combo is fun too but there's just something about defending at 7 for 0 cost, or thwarting for 7 at 1 cost that is immensely satisfying. I guess I tend to prioritize those first with my exhausts, and then use As One! as a back-up option. The arrows sort of just run themselves at that point then.

Dec 13, 2021 Brian-V · 46010

@teamcanadahockey2002 Haha, lets coordinate next time. Yeah, I don't think I had The Best Defense… in mine and got too fixated on the damage possibility like you're saying even though it seems like a no-brainer with Hawkeye's squishy-ness. Can't wait to get this one to the table later. I hadn't thought about She-Hulk, but would that work with "As One" or Quick Strike? Wouldn't you lose the Superhuman Strength after using one of them? Or would you keep putting them back on? I guess it could be doable with 1-cost and Deft Focus. Thanks for posting this, always look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Dec 14, 2021 teamcanadahockey2002 · 8732

@Brian-V With She-Hulk I'm torn about the Superhuman Strength, as you would lose it. However, I believe the Stun would still trigger, which is still 2 damage plus a stun.

I'm considering if it's possible to make a deck where she sits in alterego, and only comes out to attack when she pulls a Quickstrike, As One! or Gamma Slam. I'd use Plan of Attack to try and find one of those since your sitting in AE all the time, and Smash the Problem when the thwart gets high. Yeah, you'd lose the Superhuman Strength, but it would still stun the villain, which would protect you for the round. I would keep putting them back on though. It's possible then to Thwart for 11. I think this idea might work best in 3 or 4-player so you can just sit in AE forever, but not sure it'll be fun to play except for big turns.

The idea is still a work in progress...

@teamcanadahockey2002 May I introduce you to a Counter-Punching Spider-Woman with Brute Force :p

Dec 14, 2021 teamcanadahockey2002 · 8732

@KennedyHawk I adore playing with Spider-Woman... probably my favourite hero out there. But I can't figure out how to narrow down my these new aspect cards when there's a effective limit of 12 per aspect. With Brute Force and these new Valkyrie cards each at 3x, that takes up all 12 slots in Red. It's a good problem to have, but I just can't narrow that one down yet. If you have a deck for it, I'd love to see it though!

Dec 14, 2021 KennedyHawk · 18155

Here’s where I ended up with some help on discord. I dropped Quick Strike since Counter-Punch more or less replaces it.

love to see decks that make good use of underutilised cards. can't wait to try this one out

Dec 14, 2021 teamcanadahockey2002 · 8732

@KennedyHawk Defensive Training! Clever idea there to recur those!

I've been questioning for the last little while here if we could pull the same thing off with Gamora... essentially just a deck full of red cards, but with 3 copies of Counter-Punch added in. I'll have to try your deck later when I get a moment. Thanks!

Dec 14, 2021 InigoMontoya · 4722

@teamcanadahockey2002 I was thinking the same thing with Gamora. I find myself either using her hero power to thwart in Aggression or sometimes to defend with Crosscounter. I think this Brute Force deck idea would work great with her.

Dec 14, 2021 Blind66 · 7

I did the same deck but adding "Moment of Triumph" and "Follow Through". Vampiric Hawkeye!

Dec 17, 2021 LACK OF SUBTLETY · 1045

I love a good Hawkeye deck! I'll give this a try once I get my Valkyrie cards.

Dec 18, 2021 sp00ne · 89

@InigoMontoya you can totally do this with Gamora. I have a deck running 3x Brute Force and 3x Counterpunch. With Gamora's sword out, Combat Training, and 3x Brute Force, you end up Counterpunching for 6, dealing an extra damage for the Sword, and removing on threat. Plus, Training Room helps you dig out some of those CounterPunches. ANYWAY, looking forward to trying this when I get Valkyrie. My Hawkeye needs this deck.

As a Canadian, a huge hockey fan, and the biggest Hawkeye fanboy in the entire world.... I can't wait to try this.

I feel like a dumby for asking but, how do you find the deck id # of a deck? Marvelcdb noob here

Dec 23, 2021 dr00 · 44807

@mghouston91 look at the URL and find the numbers, for this deck, marvelcdb.com so it's just 14937

Dec 23, 2021 mghouston91 · 15

@dr00 so simple, yet I probably would've never figured that out. You da man!

Jan 10, 2022 InigoMontoya · 4722

Testing out a Ms. Marvel version of this deck, and it's really great. Seems obvious now since she doesn't ever really exhaust to attack. This idea has so many possibilities!

Jan 12, 2022 teamcanadahockey2002 · 8732

@InigoMontoya I would love to see that deck!! I really wanted to try this with her as well, but my struggles were that she's not an Avenger or Guardian removing As One! from the mix, and she exhausts for the defense and thwart boosted cards so she can't also play Morphogenics if she does that. That being said, using Shrink and Embiggen would be awesome here.

Anyways, I wasnt able to figure out something that worked well yet but would love love to try this with her. Post a link when you have a list to share?

Jan 12, 2022 InigoMontoya · 4722

@teamcanadahockey2002 Here you go:

marvelcdb.com

It's still a work in progress, and I play Ms. Marvel differently than most. I like to use Wiggle Room as much as possible for card draw. I also don't like to flip her unless I can confuse the villain. So, this deck wouldn't rely on her support personas.

You're right that As One won't work here. You're also right that Smash the Problem and The Best Defense… exhaust her. So, they'll need to be used strategically.

I usually just keep Wiggle Room in my hand the rounds I'm using them, then use Morphogenics the next round to use it and bring it back.

Thank you for this list. I used a very similar deck to play the RotRS campaign with a friend and it worked very well. Had to replace Marvel Boy with Cosmo as I don't own MTS yet, which actually kind of worked in combination with Jessica Drew's Alter-Ego ability.

How hard would it be for a newer player navigating this deck? I am a huge Hawkeye fan and mainly read that he was not a great Hero. Sounds like this deck could be a lot of fun to try.

Oct 14, 2022 KakitaJamie · 339

@teamcanadahockey2002 love this deck, awesome job. Played a version where I trimmed 1x As One!, Endurance, Hulk & Wasp for 2 The Power of Aggression & Spider-Girl. I probably should have gone with some combination of Down Time, Endurance, and/or The Best Defense… but still stay around 3 cards total.

I was inspired by your Spider-Woman comments and built her (deck 23537). I found her to be more stable than Hawkeye but then again that could have been a consequence of my cut choices.

Nov 02, 2022 Alpo · 100

I am using this same deck, but I added Boot Camp It introduces the same ideas as Energy Spear and Enraged, but it only adds 1 card and doesn't leave the table when your minion dies.

Feb 02, 2023 ArielFriedrichGauss · 14

I've just noticed this deck contains 41 cards instead of the usual 40. If I want to cut this down to 40, which card should I remove?

Apr 02, 2024 almostalive · 8

What a great deck composition! Turned Hawkeye for me from "no, thanks" into "can't stop playing him". Thanks a lot for sharing!
