This post is gonna be filled with a lot of criticism of Magneto and the Current Environmet. If you don't want to read negative opinions, maybe pass the write up. Also this write up is a bit less polished than other deck lists I've shared, I blame the pessimism.
I'm gonna be upfront about it, I don't like Magneto. Isolated kits are fine with me, Domino and Angel are heroes with some of my favorite play loops in the game. But that fact he's so isolated, while also carving such a miniscule amount of space mechanically that is wholly unique to him is rough for me to love. Like he's probably in the bottom half of my favorite heroes, but I've never thought of any placement more precise than that because I just don't think of him that much.
That being said, this is an old (ever so slightly modified ) list for him I had that kinda, almost explored a unique hook with him. Never finished a writeup because I really just wasn't inspired to. With the beta Current Environment now introduced, I figured it's now or never to talk about this, because it might be the most unique Magneto will ever be.
Concept is simple, Fitz is a good card, but can run out of targets, even early into the mid game depending on deck building and draw order. Mag can shuffle those targets back in when flipping down to Alter-Ego. And the timing of this all works perfectly.
- Use your last charge on Sonic Rifle sending it to the discard.
- Flip down to alter ego and shuffle Rifle back into the deck.
- You now have a guaranteed target for Fitz (now or possibly the start of your next turn) to grab and play.
See dead simple, and honestly a little condescending to even put steps there in the first place. Now is it a dead simple loop? Yes. Is it just another status spam strategy? Yes. But we can at least say now it's something unique enough to Mags, and discovery for current environment will definitely push away from completely new interactions and more into narrowing what card combinations still display competency when cutting things this sharply. Backing up new strategies with staple good cards is going to be even more common since the new cards have less effective combos to catch up with mechanics we knew were broken since core (cheap allies, etc). Especially with Wave 8 still hanging with way more powerful "generics" than Wave 9 onwards.
The recursion ability was "neat" for Mags before curren, even if the big draw was recycling your favorite Mag cards. Though we had a lot of heroes that could do a side grade or even straight upgrade of this loop with the likes of Domino, Ms. Marvel, or best G.I.R.L. Wasp.
Into the card-by-card
Beak, Marrow, Triage are all 2-cost basics we can play, so why not. Legitimately something here in this list could/should be cut for Iron Lad if we are "optimizing" but I'm not try arding to that degree. There's white bread, and then there's burning your toast. Quake is the same argument, but we can at least say villain confuses can open up her ability a bit. If everyone at the table is trying to optimize or rip future lists from MCDB, this can be a point of friction for groups playing with a single collection. Think of Quincarrier/Iron Heart/Basic Miles from early waves.
Gambit/Synch/Shawdocat are all good in their own right, and can enter off of TBE, which is really nifty for Shadowcat and lets you optimally slow down your buddy's turn arguing about the top of the deck order with Gambit.
Misty is my fun-of here, but I do like her flexibility to burst Thwart or damage, and enjoy the card peak she provides. Slightly cute play with her and Gambit is if you know you're out of Magnetic cards for pull, you can use them to have a little choice over your deck out deal.
BS is a good card, and look at our support line here. Gen X is a fun card and is cool for closers. Also let's you cope on actually getting your government mandated 20% chance of using a Magnetic Missle in a game.
We already mentioned Fitz, and every other support is a resource generator that's legal to play with a different reason (definitely cut Jemma if you want room for something else fun though). We already talked about rifles, so HI is the last card. Gets us to the sacred 3-THW for BS with no extra hoops, and works with Mags Ready. This is Current Justice in 2025, work with me here.
For alternatives (when you're fighting over who gets to run what cards in the smaller pool) Cukoos are a fun card, probably not optimal, but Advance cancels are one of the things of all time for a 3-cost card to do. Face the Past is also optimal here, but there's a decent chance someone else will want to run it, and inviting a different Nemesis into the game wasn't the worse argument to let someone else have it.
One thing I do love about Mags is that you know he will work when a deck touches the table. That's the same here, if that combo doesn't come online because you had way better setup earlier than that's fine, but it is a fun Mini-game to play to set it up and reap the benefits after.
Hope anyone that tries this enjoys. If you're interested in current for the purpose of trying different things I think one obligatory Mag game is not the worst you can do. He's been married to the Foxhole Package since day one, so you can at least see what that is like without it. Honestly if you had a Justice Mag deck with the Foxhole Package before, you could just replace it one-for-one with Fitz and Rifles and get everything here I promised you lol.
Anyways, happy gaming y'all!

The write up was basically just a young in cheek criticism of Current (and pot shots at Magneto because I think that's fun). I feel genuine feedback from experience and analysis (like discussing decisions, experiences, hypothetical pitfalls, etc), is a pretty healthy form of criticism and discussion. And thanks for the concern! I am enjoying the game plenty in many ways, just discussing some thoughts on recent approaches. |
Leo is also a solid target for Homeland Intervention and Global Logistics if you run out of targets! (Yes, I know, it's not "current" or whatever. But that distinction probably is adding to this negative feeling, so maybe just ignore it?)
Sorry you're down on things--but luckily there are so many heroes that you don't have to play Magneto!
