A Buddy Cop Movie Review

So I rewatched one of the recent buddy cop movies, NeXt Evolution, but before I give my spoiler review, here is the movie's synopsis:

An almost retired time cop is transported back into the past to find his missing daughter. He finds uneXpected allies along the way...as well as uneXpected villains.

The Protagonist

I am sure everyone knows Cable's backstory as his show is 15 episodes long, not counting the 6 awful episodes in that spin off show about being sick and his annoying evil twin. Cable is the type of hero that appeals to ADHD people (like myself) by constantly going on "side quests" which does prolong the movie. However, I understand why it takes this long as it shows us his character growth. I am a fan of slow burn films that build character, tension, and then have a big payoff in the finale.

The Deuteragonist

It wouldn't be a buddy cop movie without Bishop. A Chance Encounter with time travel brought this interloper to the wrong place but the right time. He underwent Mission Training with Cable to get more experience as a thwarter. His character is slow to develop but his payoff is worth it. Since he sticks around almost the whole movie, he charges up his energy frequently. Later in the review I will discuss his awesome scenes with Cable and why he doesn't always use his basic charge up attack.

Supporting Cast

Deadpool is the comic relief which means he can sometimes be a nuisance if he sticks around too long. Thankfully, he doesn't overstay his welcome as the villain usually rips him apart. Of course, he never dies so he is forever a recurring character (for better or worse).

Gambit is the thief with a heart of gold. He steals from the villain and gets stronger because of it. Sometimes, I feel like I need subtitles when he enters the movie because there is a possibility I miss what he says.

Marrow is a cool character as she focuses a lot of her attention on the villain's minions or scaring the villain if they are feeling tough. Marvel Girl is Cable's sister and what a twist! She can feel like a shoehorn in the movie but she's got a fun ability even if it isn't always utilized. She's there to support one of the main scenes this film is known for if Bishop is not around. I saw a deleted scene that had Blindfold in the movie instead but there was a last minute change from a producer because they wanted to stick to having family cameos. Lastly, Professor X helps the cast a ton with his thwarting and his other talents. Just because he is in a wheelchair doesn't mean he can't kick ass (metaphorically or I guess, mentally?)!

Favorite Scenes

We come to this place, for m̶a̶g̶i̶c Gunboat Diplomacy.

Lock and Load because this part of the movie is action packed! Cable's X-Men partner is usually Bishop but it can vary depending on the scene. It exhausts both characters so Bishop does not have to worry about consequential damage and stays in the movie longer. After a turn or two, he deals damage with his stored up energy. The parts when Cable is Making an Entrance to Rally the Troops, Build Support, or Render Medical Aid, then heal himself AND ready up? So flexible and helpful for his team. He must have gone through some Specialized Training or Superpower Training to achieve such feats.

The Ending

At the start of act two, when Hope Summers joins the team, the good guy's power ceiling is raised significantly. Gunboat Diplomacy scenes are so OP with Hope Summers as she copies her Dad's strength. I kinda felt bad for Professor X's step bro and that Sting looking guy for getting absolutely obliterated. I gotta say I am not a big fan of the last villain. His evil twin again? Ugh, we already have his spin-off show and no one wants to see it. That being said, it is always funny to see someone hitting themselves, literally. I give the film a 7.8/10 and the main character a 10/10.
