General deck ideas:
-
To utilize Peter's strengths such as Aunt May and her healing, Black Cat and her free ping damage, good defense, and great economy.
-
To minimize his (only real) weakness - thwarting. While I love the Spider-Tracer it's not nearly enough. Especially taking into account my next point.
-
To flip as often as possible. Mainly because I love flipping, but also to utilize Aunt May, as she offers almost unprecedented healing. For those reasons going for Justice build felt like a natural choice.
-
To make the deck feel thematic. This was done both through omissions, by not picking Helicarrier, Avenger Mansion, Sonic Rifle etc. (cards that we often use but don't really scream Spider Man), but also by picking cards like Miles Morales, Ingenuity, Sense of Justice etc. which almost define Peter. Arguably Sidearm is not very thematic, but considering how well it works with Black Cat and her free ping 2 damage every turn this was the one concession I made.
-
To include a lot of mental resources for thematic reasons, but also because they go well with Black Cat.
-
NOT to use Web-Warriors but to offer an alternative, as I feel every deck nowadays uses the same 10 cards. Which ties nicely into my next goal.
-
NOT to overload the deck with allies, another common trait of a lot of decks. Five total feels like a good number.
-
NOT to heavily rely on statues - mainly to make the experience more consistent and not dependent on the match-up.
Play-by-play Report:
While the goal is not to build the most optimal deck it's certainly important to be able to win consistently. I ran this build solo through the expert Sinister Motives campaign and it performed really well, taking down every villain on the first try while finishing at max HP in each of the scenarios aside the last one. Honestly I was surprised how well Spider-Man handled everything this campaign threw at him. I would say he is on par, and probably even better then a lot of new heroes.
You have three pieces that you want out. Those are Aunt May, Black Cat and Ingenuity. You mulligan for them. With you Aunt on the board don't be afraid to take punches to your face. She is very good at mending her nephew's wounds, healing him for amazing 8 hit points when you flip.
You can pretty much flip at-will as most of your deck is constructed in a way to allow you to do that. Threat was never a problem, even when there were multiple side-schemes added in the same turn.
Never once have I sacrificed Black Cat as an emergency chump-block. Once she got on the board she was determined to ping toughs, and annoy villains to no end. Play Sidearm on her for an even bigger comedy.
Spider-Man is pretty good at dealing big damage with Swinging Web Kicks, and few allies he has will help him out with minor threats.
But MOST IMPORTANTLY I can honestly say I had a lot of fun.
Suggested adjustments:
If I were willing to compromise on some of my goals from earlier this deck could probably be improved. For one, there are probably better ally choices. You could, for example, include Moon Girl and/or Ironheart for card draw, and Professor X for added thwarting and confuses. You could also improve the deck economy. Do you really need to? Well, NO. But it can be better. Simply include any combination of Quincarrier, Helicarrier, Avenger Mansion and you are good to go. If you like more consistency you could go for Endurance and Under Surveillance.
As for the cards I would pluck out of the build - If you are aiming for more economy removing The Power of Justice for aforementioned economy cards is a decent trade. Aside from that easiest exclusion would probably be Justice Served and Sense of Justice.
