Protection is probably my least favorite aspect in Marvel Champions mostly because it seems like it's not capable of the same synergistic engines that other aspects can put together. That being said if you are playing protection in multi-player or solo and want to be able to Thwart, deal with threats and protect it seems like Allies and upgrades are still probably the best options.
Threat Control Spider-man struggles with threat so he needs a combination of Allies, events, and upgrades to Thrwart just enough. Star-Lord and Spider-Man are the most efficient allies available that can be healed with Med team. Bait and Switch works well with Spider-Man's Spider-Sense ability. Hard to Ignore will help but can be hampered by crisis icons.
Minion Control Allies and Energy Barrier are going to be your best defense against minions.
