Welcome back to Precon Recon! Today, we'll be looking at Captain Marvel and how we can upgrade her deck to cosmic proportions. But before you read on, be sure to check out our breakdown of her core set and FFG official precon here: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2727362/1-2-punchboards-precon-recon-captain-marvel
Defender of Earth
A lot of folks have come to associate Carol Danvers with a more aggressive demeanor, whether it be because of the film presenting her as a "punch first ask questions later" type or due to comic writers misrepresenting her in stories like Civil War II. In actuality, while Captain Marvel is inclined to punch baddies in the face, her core mantras stem from a want to defend people, regardless of where they come from. She's known for going on extensive intergalactic missions to protect oppressed peoples all over the galaxy, as well as manning the Alpha Flight Station to protect Earth from incoming evil-doers. So Protection is, honestly, a very fitting Aspect for her to use.
In this role, Carol pulls from a few different elements of her life. From the perspective of allies, Carol is often supported by the government, whether it be in the form of SHIELD leader Nick Fury or her once lover War Machine. Working for governmental bodies also has its perks in regards to what deck she has access to; things like Quincarriers, Energy Barriers, and Med Teams are at her disposal, allowing her to do her job more efficiently and safely.
But even without those external tools, Captain Marvel is a force to be reckoned with unto herself, capable of incredible feats of endurance. She is Ever Vigilant, ready to leap into action at the drop of a hat, able to find her Second Wind in the most trying of times. And wow can she take a punch, using her Defensive Stance and True Grit to stand against some powerful blows. And if things get hairy, she can always Subdue her opponents in hopes of controlling the situation. It's hard to deny, Carol can do a whole lot of everything when she puts her mind to it.
Mighty Hand
Captain Marvel's greatest strength is her card draw, and this deck works to make the most of it. Quincarrier will allow you to trigger her core ability, healing you for 1 and drawing you an extra card. Combined with Avengers Mansion, Alpha Flight Station, and her Alter-Ego ability, and you can start turns with up to 9 cards at your disposal. This allows you to get a lot of stuff done, as well as being unafraid to play cards like Subdue and True Grit to help control the board between rounds.
By far the most important card in your deck, though, is Ever Vigilant. Once you get a copy of Cosmic Flight into play, you'll be able to control the board in an almost unparalleled fashion, removing a ton of threat while giving you the opportunity to hit hard or thwart some more. Cosmic Flight also gives you an emergency evacuation option if you get hit particularly hard.
Most of her other cards give her survivability options while also providing the ever helpful energy resource. Youw ant to stay in hero form as long as possible to abuse your healing and get hard work done, flipping down when Spider-Woman can confuse the villain or on those rare occasions when you need to heal, assuming Second Wind hasn't kept you hale and hardy. It's a pretty simple deck that relies on Carol's core set to do the heavy lifting we all know it can by giving her to tools to make that engine tick.
Thanks as always for stopping by, let us know your thoughts in the comments, and we'll see you in a few weeks for our next Precon Recon!
I have a Captain Marvel Aggression deck I'm very happy with, but I'm always on the look-out for heroes who can run a solo Protection deck and still be viable. I hadn't considered Captain Marvel for this at all, but I understand your logic and thematic rationale.
I'm not sure this deck really pulls it off, though. She seems too dependent on the two Cosmic Flight cards to activate her Helmet and the three Ever Vigilants - which means you'll be less inclined to use them for their core purpose of avoiding damage. Given the objective of your exercise - decks for all heroes that can exist at the same time - this has the feel of a deck you've dumped a bunch of weaker cards into because Carol herself is such a powerhouse she can overcome a weak deck. Big exception to that is Quincarrier, which you've used here whereas I'd have expected a lot of other heroes to have needed this card more (I never seem to lack for energy resources to feed her healing power). Second Wind seems totally out of place for a hero with constant healing and a high Rec stat (and who wants to go to alter ego and two extra cards whenever it's remotely feasible), and it doesn't have an energy resource.
Kudos for the fun idea, though!
